The Leadership in Energy
and Environmental Design
(LEED®) Green Building Rating
System represents the U.S. Green Building
Council’s effort to provide a national
standard for what constitutes “green”
buildings and homes.
Through its use as a design guideline
and third-party certification tool, LEED®
and LEED® for Homes aim to improve
occupant well-being, environmental
performance and economic returns of
buildings and homes using established
and innovative practices, standards and
technologies. Green homes and buildings
use less energy, water and natural
resources, create less waste and are
healthier and more comfortable for
the occupants.
Benefits of a LEED® home or building
include lower energy and water bills,
reduced greenhouse gas emissions and
less exposure to mold, mildew and other
indoor toxins. The LEED® building rating
system has been established to evaluate
every aspect of the construction process
and building components used in new
and existing buildings. While the main
emphasis is on energy efficiency,
conservation and the overall “health” of
the building, the use of ”green” products
contributes favorably to the overall rating
of a building.
